Daryl Gibson’s “A Textbook for Trumpet” was a book often cited by Doc Severinsen in his masterclasses (some of which you can find on youtube), most specifically, the areas on warming up and proper embouchure control. Once you go through this book for the first time you will understand why. It is thoughtful and extremely in-depth, with over 100 pages of deep analysis of all areas of playing. The book is broken up into two big sections: Playing the Trumpet, and Teaching the Trumpet. The playing section is divided into subsections that include choosing and maintaining an instrument, tone production principles, intonation, breathing and support muscles, lip and tongue muscle development, and daily routines. The teaching section is divided into daily practice plans, study repertoire, solo repertoire, transposition, ensemble routines, theory, and case studies. Gibson says he had 5 things he wanted to present in this book. He achieved them all and much more: A textbook for the player and the teacher of the trumpet; The concepts of many outstanding teachers integrated into one method; A daily routine which will benefit the player in much the same way as the famous routines of the master teacher, Max Schlossberg; Practical exercises to accomplish correct results rather than merely a discussion of many of the theories of brass playing. A knowledge of the many facets of playing is fine, but the real test is in finding exercises that will build correctly; Material that, while written for trumpet, is applicable to all brass instruments. This is a fantastic resource for any trumpeter, and if you are going into the college level or plan to teach privately, this book is an absolute necessity.
